Mateo Castellano is the only Spanish character in the series. He is a rude, obnoxious and arrogant womaniser who more-often-than-not gets his own way. As a member of staff at the hotel, he has the job of looking after the pool bar - which is a prime location to chat up the female guests.
Series 1 Edit
When the guests first arrive in Series 1 Mateo takes an interest in Kate Weedon (Abigail Cruttenden) and despite the fact she is married he constantly flirts with her. In Series 1 episode 3 he ends up sleeping with Kate which upsets his fiancé Kelly. Mateo obviously has no interest in either women because in the next episode he sleeps with Troy Ramsbottom (Paul Bazely).
Series 2 Edit
In Series 2 he forgotten about Kate although when she returns to the Solana he starts flirting with her again unaware of the fact that he slept with her last year. In Series 2 episode 3 he has an arm wrestling contest with Martin Weedon (Nicholas Burns) who was determined to beat Mateo after he slept with his wife last year. When they take the guests to watch bullfighting Mateo ends up becoming the Torero! In Series 2 episode 5 Mateo tries to get back with his old flame, Kelly. Unfortunately Kelly's mother Sylvia is in town and she doesn't suffer fools gladly.
Series 3 Edit
In Series 3 Mateo helps Mel Harvey (Geoffrey Hutchings) arranges a meeting with the owner of Peacock Island. He also tells Noreen Maltby (Elsie Kelly) that her son is gay. Martins new travel friend Brandy (Sheridan Smith) catches Mateos eye. Brandy seduces Mateo and steals his pass key!
Series 4 Edit
In Series 4 one of Mateos old loves, Natalie Jones (Kathryn Drysdale), returns however her friend Sam Wood (Shelley Longworth) is determined to make sure they do not get back together. In Series 4 episode 3 Donald has a heart attack during one of Mateos aerobic seasons he almost loses his job until Les Conroy (Tim Healy) helps him get it back. In return Mateo offers to go on a double date with Les however he ends up being arrested when a policeman thought he was a prostitute as he was wearing women's clothes! In the next episode, his clothes are stolen by an old mate of Sam's and he has no option but to walk through Benidorm stark naked! Sam also finds out that Mateo has a wife and 3 kids!
Series 5 Edit
In Series 5, he dislikes the new manageress, Joyce Temple-Savage (Sherrie Hewson) who wants the Solana to be upgraded to a 4 star hotel. In this Series he also teaches Les's son, Liam Conroy (Adam Gillen) on how to chat up women. In Series 5 episode 2 Mateo has a dance of with Cyril Babcock (Matthew Kelly) and in episode 3 he becomes a life guard and saves Trudy (Michelle Butterly)
Series 6 Edit
In Series 6 he has competition with new barman, Jason. In Series 6 episode 4 he becomes an Umpire of the Volley Ball match at the Solana however he bends the rules of the game so that he can win a bet he's made with young Tiger Dyke (Danny Walters) and Michael Garvey (Oliver Stokes), but he soon regrets it when Tiger's parents enter the karaoke competition at Neptune's that night. When Mateo starts flirting with Bianca Dyke (Bel Powley) she is determined that he gets fired! Les pretends to fire him to keep her happy although Mateo thought he was actually fired so he led a staff walk out!
Series 7 Edit
In Series 7 Mateo gets Botox from Kenneth Du Beke (Tony Maudsley) and when Joyce becomes sick after having Botox herself she leave Mateo in-charge. In the final episode of the Series A miserable Mateo reveals that home life is a disaster and confides in Lesley that his mother-in-law Dolores is threatening to kill him. Lesley urges him to get out and start a new life. Plucking up the courage, Mateo decides to move out the same day, but when he arrives home Dolores is waiting! After almost being killed by his Mother-in-law he decides its not safe for him in Benidorm so therefore he moves to Madrid.
